The patient TM, wearer of a bicuspid valve prosthesis, has been diagnosed with infectious endicarditis due to Candida albicans. The yeast has been isolated both from blood and excised valve. After mycological diagnosis, the patient has been treated with fluconazole in accordance with antifungal susceptibility testing, but 3 blood cultures made obvious cell wall deficient forms irreversible to normal growth. The smears performed from reversion media exhibit yeast-like cells but no growth has been detected in subcultures on solid media. Thus, it has been impossible to do the identification and the susceptibility testing for the isolated strains. The patient has died due to multiple septic embolisms.
