Aim: Evaluation of the effect of fluconazole addition to boar semen diluents on main reproductive parameters in swine. Materials and methods: We used 2 diluents (A and B) in which different quantities of fluconazole have been added – 250, and 125 mg/l respectively. Their effect on sperm quality has been evaluated after 12 hours of storage through motility and progressivity testing. Also, the fecundity and prolificity of sows inseminated with the diluted sperm containing fluconazole have been evaluated. Results: The fluconazole concentration of 250 mg/l decrease the motility and progressivity in both samples of semen diluted with A and B comparing to witness sample. The reduced concentration (125 mg/l) either increases the progressivity (as in case of A) or has no effect (as in case of B). This concentration didn’t affect the fertility and prolificity percentages, their values being the same as in witness group. Discussion: Fluconazole addition to semen diluents has a real benefit for improving the quality of yeast contaminated sperm and doesn’t affect the reproductive parameters in sows.
